Click Away Listener
ClickAwayListener detects clicks outside a target region and helps close transient UI elements safely.
ClickAwayListener is a utility component intended for dismissible UI patterns. It should be used only when a specific interaction area must remain open until the user clicks or touches outside it.
When to use
Use ClickAwayListener for interface patterns such as:
- dropdown menus
- popovers and overlays
- small panels or tooltips with interactive content
- custom context menus
It is not necessary for static or permanently visible elements.
Best practices
Keep the active area clear
Wrap only the actual interactive region that should remain open. Avoid enclosing large page sections that may unintentionally close when users interact with nearby controls.
Use clear dismiss behavior
When the active UI is visible, provide an explicit closing affordance such as a close button, and also close it with ClickAwayListener for an expected fallback experience.
Preserve accessibility
Ensure the wrapped content remains keyboard-accessible. The click-away behavior should not interfere with focus-managed keyboard navigation.
Combine with state management
Use onClickAway to update component state and hide the transient UI. If an open panel has nested interactive controls, keep them inside the wrapped element so they do not trigger a false outside click.
